Thibault Liger-Belair
Nuits-Saint-Georges
Meet the producer
This family-owned estate has been rooted in history since the 18th century. Located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, this estate is the result of a passion for winemaking and a know-how passed down through generations.
A Historical Heritage
The history of the estate begins in 1720 with Claude Marey, a squire and secretary to the king, who founded the C. Marey house to market his harvests of fine wines. His son, Claude Philibert Marey, took over the management of the business in 1781, continuing the family tradition. After Claude Philibert's death in 1804, his younger son, Guillaume Félix Marey, succeeded him and, in 1852, partnered with his son-in-law, Count Louis Liger-Belair, a owner of Grand Crus in Vosne-Romanée. This collaboration gave rise to the C. Marey and Comte Liger-Belair house.
Over the decades, the estate continued to thrive. After Guillaume Félix's death in 1869, Count Liger-Belair took the reins, followed by his son, Count Edgard Liger-Belair, in 1878. In 1906, he established the Liger-Belair and Sons Successors company with his three sons, further solidifying the family legacy.
Continuous Evolution
The estate has weathered the ages, with notable figures such as Félix Liger-Belair, who became Chairman of the Board in 1949, and his son Xavier, who served as General Director. After Xavier's death in 1982, his son Vincent took over the family buildings and restructured the estate, while establishing partnerships with three winemakers from the Côte to ensure the sustainability of the operation.
In 2001, Thibault Liger-Belair, Vincent's son, took over the estate and created the Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair. Today, the estate is committed to showcasing its terroir and producing exceptional wines while preserving the family heritage.
The Estate’s philosophy
The vineyards are cultivated using organic methods, ensuring that every grape is grown with care and attention. Thibault focuses on achieving a perfect balance of richness and elegance in his wines. He works closely with two skilled coopers to select the best barrels, limiting the use of new oak to no more than 50%. This approach ensures that the wood does not impact the wine's natural flavors at all.
The percentage of whole grapes used varies with each cuvée and vintage, but the grapes are always harvested at their peak ripeness. Recently, the estate has moved to a new winery that runs on geothermal and solar energy, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
The estate produces a variety of wines, including Hautes-Côtes de Nuits and Vosne-Romanée, as well as Premier Crus like Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges, Aloxe-Corton La Toppe au Vert, and Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers. Among its exceptional red Grand Crus are Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes, Corton Les Renardes, and Clos du Roi. For white, the highlight is the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Les Languettes, the estate's most prestigious offering.
Thibault Liger-Belair believes that the quality of his wines is deeply connected to the respect for the vineyard and its soils. He is dedicated to nurturing the vines, allowing them to express their full potential in every bottle.
In addition to his Nuits-Saint-Georges estate, Thibault has always been drawn to the beauty of the Beaujolais region, particularly its landscapes and the quality and diversity of its soils, having completed part of his studies in Belleville.
The first parcels of land were purchased in 2008, with the goal of producing the first vintage in 2009. He applied the same working methods as those used in Nuits-Saint-Georges, reintroducing ploughing while eliminating all herbicides. He converted all the parcels to organic farming in the first year and subsequently transitioned to biodynamic practices.
